A Room-by-Room Packing Timeline: What to Pack First

The easiest packing timeline moves from least-used belongings to daily essentials. Finishing one category at a time creates visible progress without disrupting normal life too early.

Four or more weeks out

Start with attic, garage, storage closets, seasonal decor, books, collectibles, guest-room contents, and out-of-season clothing. This is also the best time to sell or donate items because there is still time to complete pickups.

Three to two weeks out

Pack artwork, most linens, serving pieces, small appliances, hobby equipment, extra cookware, office archives, and clothing you will not wear. Back up computers before preparing them, and label cords and accessories.

The final week

Reduce each room to a working minimum. Pack most dishes, toys, bathroom supplies, and remaining decor. Keep cleaning tools available for the final walkthrough and separate items that the mover will not transport.

The final night

Pack an open-first kit with bedding, toiletries, towels, basic dishes, tools, chargers, paper goods, and children’s or pets’ essentials. Carry identification, medication, valuables, keys, and agreements personally.

Make your next step easier

Good moves start with clear information. Keep written notes, confirm important details with the company providing the service, and update your inventory whenever the plan changes.
