Open vs. Enclosed Auto Transport: Which Is Right?

Open and enclosed auto transport both move vehicles on specialized carriers, but they offer different levels of exposure, capacity, availability, and cost. The right choice depends on the vehicle and your priorities.

How open transport works

Open carriers are widely used for everyday vehicles and can carry multiple units at once. The vehicle is exposed to normal road conditions and weather, similar to ordinary driving, though it is secured on the carrier rather than driven to the destination.

How enclosed transport differs

An enclosed trailer provides additional shielding from weather and road debris. It is often considered for collector, exotic, restored, low-clearance, custom, or especially valuable vehicles. Capacity and availability may be more limited.

Compare more than trailer type

Ask about carrier authority, insurance documentation, loading methods, clearance, pickup and delivery access, estimated windows, cancellation terms, and who will communicate during transit. Understand whether the company is the carrier or a broker arranging transport.

Document vehicle condition

Regardless of transport type, clean the vehicle enough to inspect it, photograph all sides in good light, note existing damage, remove personal property unless specifically permitted, and review the condition report at pickup and delivery before signing.

Make your next step easier

Good moves start with clear information. Keep written notes, confirm important details with the company providing the service, and update your inventory whenever the plan changes.
