A properly prepared vehicle is easier to inspect, load, secure, and deliver. Always follow the specific carrier’s instructions, because equipment and acceptance policies can differ.
Confirm operating condition
Tell the transporter about leaks, warning lights, brake or steering issues, low clearance, modifications, non-running condition, or mechanical problems before dispatch. Check tire inflation and fluids without topping the fuel tank unnecessarily; many carriers request roughly a quarter tank or less.
Remove belongings and accessories
Take out personal items unless the written policy expressly allows them. Remove toll tags, loose electronics, removable racks, custom accessories, and exterior items that could detach. Secure or retract antennas and spoilers according to vehicle and carrier guidance.
Clean and photograph the vehicle
A basic wash makes existing scratches and dents easier to see. Take dated photos of every side, wheels, glass, roof, interior, and odometer. Review the pickup inspection carefully and keep a copy.
Prepare for handoff
Provide required keys and any special starting, alarm, battery, or transmission instructions. Make sure the pickup and delivery contacts have identification, working phones, and safe access for a large carrier—or agree on a nearby meeting location.
Make your next step easier
Good moves start with clear information. Keep written notes, confirm important details with the company providing the service, and update your inventory whenever the plan changes.
